What Happens

The fruit when M2L governs — and what collapses when it doesn't.

When M2L Governs: What God Does

When we give God our first attention and affection — when Ministry to the Lord holds its rightful place — God responds. Not because we earn it, but because this is the order He designed.

1. We Are Transformed

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)

Transformation does not come from trying harder. It comes from beholding. We become like what we worship. This is the deepest fruit of M2L: we are made more like Jesus through sustained attention to His glory.

2. We Gain Clarity and Direction

While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'

Acts 13:2 (NASB)

Direction for the most significant missionary movement in history came from ministering to the Lord. Clarity is a fruit of worship, not planning.

3. We Are Strengthened and Renewed

But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

The Hebrew qavah means to wait, to bind together — active, expectant dependence. M2L is not wasted time. It is the source of sustainable strength.

4. God Fights Our Battles

As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men… and they were defeated.

2 Chronicles 20:22 (NIV)

Jehoshaphat's battle was won not by might or numbers but by worship and reliance on God. Our battles are won in the secret place before they are won in the open field.

5. The Spirit Speaks and Sends

The Acts 13 pattern is the norm God intends: they gathered to worship (M2L), the Spirit spoke (revelation), the mission was launched (M4L). Without space for M2L, we act from assumption. With it, we act from instruction.

6. Our Weapons Are Forged

Spiritual weapons are received in the Holy Place, not on the battlefield. The Word becomes sharp when it moves from casual reading to Spirit-revealed truth. Prayer becomes powerful when aligned with His will. Without M2L, our weapons are dull. With M2L, they are Spirit-forged and effective.

7. Ministry Becomes Overflow, Not Overwork

When M4L flows out of M2L, ministry becomes:

  • Overflow, not overwork
  • Spirit-led, not self-driven
  • Joyful, not exhausting

When M2L Is Lost: What Collapses

The drift away from M2L is never sudden. It is quiet, slow, and often unnoticed — until the consequences arrive.

Asa: A Living Warning

PEAKRiseDriftEARLY YEARS2 Chr 14–15DependenceSought GodRest givenMIDDLE2 Chr 16IndependenceRelied on AramWar declaredFINAL16:12Cannot returnDid not seekDisease without God

The Early Years (2 Chronicles 14–15): Asa began in radical dependence. He removed idols, restored the altar, led national covenant renewal. When a vastly superior army attacked, he prayed: “LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, LORD our God, for we rely on you.” God gave overwhelming victory and rest on every side.

The Drift (2 Chronicles 16:1–6): By year 35, something had shifted internally. When a new threat arose, Asa did not pray. He took silver and gold from the Temple and made a political alliance. It worked militarily. But it was spiritually catastrophic.

The Rebuke (2 Chronicles 16:7–10): The prophet Hanani exposed the heart issue. But Asa became angry, imprisoned Hanani, and oppressed some of the people.

The End (2 Chronicles 16:12): Even his final disease reveals the deeper issue: “In his disease he did not seek the LORD, but the physicians.” He stopped seeking God altogether.

The Pattern of Collapse

Asa's story is a microcosm of what happens whenever M2L is lost — in a person, a family, a church, or a movement:

1. Functional Independence2. Alliances Replace Prayer3. Loss of Rest4. Harshness Toward God's Servants5. Spiritual Blindness6. Inability to Return

1. Functional Independence. We keep believing in God but stop relying on Him. Effort replaces dependence.

2. Alliances Replace Prayer. We turn to human resources instead of seeking God first.

3. Loss of Rest. When M2L governed, God gave rest. When it was lost, war was declared.

4. Harshness Toward God's Servants. Leaders resist correction and silence honest voices.

5. Spiritual Blindness. The drift is quiet and often unnoticed.

6. Inability to Return. A heart hardened by years of independence may lose the reflex to turn back.

The Warning for Every Generation

Judges: Every generation that forgot M2L fell into the cycle of idolatry, oppression, and despair.

Solomon: Began with worship so powerful the priests could not stand. Ended with divided affection and idolatry.

The Seven Churches (Revelation 2–3): Ephesus had correct doctrine and tireless labor — but had forsaken their first love.

M4L without ongoing M2L always collapses. Not immediately. Not visibly at first. But inevitably.

If you seek him, he will be found by you.

2 Chronicles 15:2 (NIV)

The drift is quiet. But returning is always possible when we humble ourselves.
